I’m both a little sad, and completely bouncing with excitement over the fact that this month sees the last block in our LIVE.LOVE.SEW Feature Block program, and the impending end of this years Block of the Month quilt. I’ve had so much fun putting these tutorials and pattern sheets together, and seeing your finished blocks, and quilts and photos makes my day each and every time I’m sent them.
December’s block is the Old Maid’s Puzzle – this is such a common block, is seen in many sampler quilts and dates back to 19th Century quilts made by the Amish. I love the simplicity of this block, and am so excited to be featuring it in our quilt. This version uses only HST and patchwork squares and is such a quick and easy block to piece.

Fabric arrangement and colour has a huge impact on the finished result when using these blocks in multiples – I love the secondary patterns and effects it creates when you use more than a two-colour fabric combination. We opted to use two fabrics in this block, and I’m loving the look of it. The navy really pops against this fabric, and once all my blocks are assembled in our final layout each shape, and each fabric will have the chance to shine.
I can’t wait to see what you all come up with – thankyou for sewing along with me. It truly has been a wonderful experience getting to know you all, and following your progress and your versions. Join me again on the 15th December to talk about final layouts and finishing those blocks! Click here to catch up on all the Feature Blocks.
